2013 Season

Teams are set for the 2013 Spring Big League season. Any questions, contact Jeff Buxton at jbuxton@validityinc.com, 978-886-1801.

The season starts 4/21, and finishes in time for summer baseball, 6/2. The league plays 7-inning doubleheaders on Sunday afternoons so players on spring sports teams can fully participate. The schedule is flexible, so playing one 9 innings game works, or even a Saturday game will work.

Check with your high school coach, but many programs allow their players to participate. Some even actively encourage it. Usually the players are in the 10th to 12th grade, but there is no restriction on 9th graders playing if you need them to fill out a roster.

If after being presented with these rules in writing, any umpire refuses to abide by these rules, the home team manager has the authority to dismiss the umpires without compensation and assign new umpires as he sees fit. The MA District 14 District Administrator, Frank Flanagan, is the authority for this dismissal, and authority to appoint new umpires.

9 players are needed to play a game. If you have less than 9, this isn’t an official game. You can ask the umpires if they are willing to stay, but they are free to go at their own choosing since allowing an unofficial game and “borrowing” players can cause them liability issues.

If you know you will have less than 9, please do not just grab kids "off the street" as this can cause liabilty issues. You may call up younger players from your town as long as they are registered with your league, or use the pool player system to borrow players from a different Big League team in your town. Just get the games played, but stay safe.

Other towns play two (2) 7-inning games, although by agreement a single 9-inning game has been played when the rosters are short, or players have to leave early, or something. We leave that to the managers to work out amongst themselves. It's better if you do before the game and notify the umpires.

Emphasis is on participation: we use a continuous batting order (everyone at the game is in the lineup, late arrivals go to the bottom of the lineup), and free defensive substitution (fielders other than the pitcher can go in and out of the field as you wish. Pitchers, as long as they don't leave the game on defense, can re-enter as a pitcher ONCE per game.

The entirety of Little League Regulation VI Pitchers is waived: no pitch counts are kept: managers are expected to use their best judgment. This is an approved modification of Little League rules, since we only play once a week. You may adhere to the pitch count rules for your team at your discretion.

We use LL Rule 7.08(a)(3): If the fielder has the ball and is waiting to make the tag, the runner must slide OR attempt to avoid, or he’s out. He doesn’t have to avoid, just attempt to avoid. He never has to slide. We do not use the Force Play Slide Rule. That’s New Hampshire.

TEWKSBURY - OBDENS FIELD - 286 Livingston Street, Tewksbury, MA

Directions

Dascomb Rd turns into East,St when you cross into Tewksbury from Andover. Take a left onto Livingston, St at the four way intersection in the middle of surrounding corn fields. If you pass the State Hospital you've gone to far on East,St. Obdens field is the field closest to Livingston, St (25 feet away). It 'll be the first field on your right.

North Andover High School (90') - 430 Osgood Street, North Andover, MA 01845

Route 93 North To Route 495 Going North

Take the Massachusetts Avenue exit (#43) and go right at the end of the ramp (Mass. Ave.). Go to the second set of lights and take a left onto Chickering Road - 125. Go down the hill and go through 1 set of lights. Go about 100 yards and take a right at the VFW onto Park Street. At the next stop sign, take a left onto Osgood Street. Stay on Osgood Street for about 1/4 mile and youll see the North Andover High School sign on the left. Enter the driveway and go over two speed bumps and park anywhere.

From Route 495 Going South

Take the Merrimack Street/Sutton Street exit (#44). Go under the bridge and keep to the right. At the stop sign at the bottom of the ramp, take a left. Go over the railroad tracks and through a set of lights. Continue straight up the hill past the airport and take a right at the next set of lights (China Blossom Restaurant). You are now on Route 125. At the next set of lights, take a left (this is a very short street)). Take a right at the stop sign. Follow this road (keeping to your right) for approximately 1/2 mile. You will see the North Andover High School sign on the right. Enter the driveway and go over two speed bumps and park anywhere.

From Route 114W

Follow Route 114 past Merrimack College on your left. Take a right onto Rte. 125 at Bertuccis Restaurant. Follow Route 125 through 4 sets of lights (one set is a blinking light) through the intersection of 125 (Chickering Road) and Main Street. Immediately after this, take the first right at the VFW, onto Park Street. Go to the stop sign and take a left onto Osgood Street. Stay on Osgood Street for 1/4 mile and youll see the North Andover High School sign on the left. Enter the driveway and go over two speed bumps and park anywhere.

From Route 114W

North Andover Middle School (90') - 495 Main St, North Andover, MA 01845 (visible from Rt 125)

NAMS is visible from Route 125 between Massachusetts Avenue and Main Street. There are two ways to get to it:

1. From Route 495, take the Massachusetts Ave exit and head towards North Andover, take a LEFT at Atkinson Elementary School onto Philips Brooks Road – go around Atkinson school to the RIGHT, take a LEFT, and park near the field

2. If you are approaching from the north on Route 125, take a RIGHT onto Main St, take a LEFT into the Middle School and drive around the back of the school, go LEFT around the back of NAMS, and then RIGHT up the hill and park near the field

Grogan's Field (90') - 50 Baldwin St, North Andover, MA 01845

1. From 495, Take Rte 213 to first exit (Rt 113)

2. Bear RIGHT at end of exit, immediately merge to the LEFT

3. Take LEFT at next light to Milk St (Burger King will be on your left)

4. Take first LEFT into Veterans Park (approx 3 houses past Parlex)

5. Follow road into parking lot, field is at the back of park

Andover High School Freshman Field - 98 Shawsheen Road, Andover, MA 01840

At Andover High School. From I-93 take Exit 43, Rte 133 towards Andover. Follow Rte 133 (Lowell St) approximately 1.5 miles. Take a right at the traffic light onto Shawsheen Road. Follow Shawsheen Road approx. 0.7 miles. Turn right into School driveway.

Follow driveway past ball fields bearing slightly left in front of the High School and park in parking lot to the left of the High School Field house. Freshman Field is at the far end of the field to the left of the parking lot closest to the Football Stadium.

From Rt 128/95

Travel north on Cambridge St/MA-3A for 5.2 miles. Turn right onto Webb Brook Rd. Follow Webb Brook Rd to the end and turn left onto Allen Rd. School is one half mile down on the Right.

From Rt 93

Take Exit 38 onto Rt 129 North/ Lowell Street. Follow 129 for 1.5 miles and turn Right on Rt 38/Rt 129. Follow 38 for 1.2 miles and turn Left onto Richmond St / Rt 129. Stay on Rt 129 for 2.7 miles. Turn left onto Baldwin Rd (at Fire Station). Follow Baldwin Rd for 1.9 miles and turn left onto Urban St. Follow Urban Street in Locke Middle School.

From Rt 3

Take exit 27 to merge onto Concord Rd toward Billerica. Follow Concord Rd for approximately 1.7 miles into Billerica Center. Turn right onto Boston Rd for approximately one half mile. Turn left (at Friendly’s Restaurant) onto Tower Farm Rd. Take your second right onto Whittier Rd. Follow Whittier to the end. Turn left onto Allen Rd. Lock Middle School will be on your right.

From Route 495 South, take exit 34 (Route 110). Take a right off the ramp. The baseball fields are 1/2 mile ahead on the right. Volunteer field is the furthest field to the right inside the complex.

Because the parking for the 110 Fields is limited, we ask that when your child is playing at Volunteer, please park in the lot that is along the first base line at the side of Volunteer Field. Besides, that lot is more convenient to the bleachers at Volunteer Field than is the 110 parking lot. The parking for Volunteer is accessible via the nameless street between Wilson Street and the youth-sized fields.

Take Rt.93 north from Boston area to Rt.495 south - take exit 38 (Rt.38) off Rt. 495 - go right onto Rt.38 towards Lowell for 2.5 miles - stay on Rt.38 cross the Merrimack River and around the rotary (stay on Rt.38) - after rotary go right onto Bridge St.(still Rt.38) - proceed .3 miles - take right onto 11th St. - at top of the hill take a left onto Beacon St. - field is .2 miles on left(field is behoind the Robinson Middle School)

From the West
Take Rt.495 north to exit 38 (Rt.38) - go right onto Rt.38 towards Lowell and proceed same as from points south
